Brain Tumor: Senior Thesis Project

My SVA BFA Illustration senior thesis project is an original narrative. The narrative is about the degeneration of the boundary between human and nature in a progressing brain tumor. A brain tumor presses on different areas of the brain, making the subject lose touch with reality, resulting in a change in personality, saying things that don’t make sense, and regressing to a younger, more emotional and vulnerable version of yourself. These end-of-life medical events are reminders of our own mortality, and that every life must expire and return to nature, where it began. This is manifested in pieces of the outdoors making their way into the patient's home and reintegrating themselves until the boundaries of have completely dissolved.

The patient's delusions remind us that the root of all suffering is human’s rejection of themselves as a part of nature, positing oneself as a conqueror above it. The degeneration of this boundary at the end of our lives is a reminder that the boundary between humans and nature is smoke and mirrors of our own creation, a futile attempt to temporarily forget our own mortality.
